Opening Night......invite everyone, its a great night to gather together & celebrate this inspiring community event. We love Art from Trash!

Last year the Hobart City Council, through continued sponsorship, purchased a range of works from the Exhibition as part of it's Public Art Program. These works have been installed at the new resource  recovery centre at McRobies Gully in South Hobart. So next time you visit the South Hobart Tip-shop take a look at the artwork. This proved an inspiring and successful collaboration between HCC, Resource & Artists. ........Update: Pleased to announce HCC continues with sponsorship & will be purchasing works from the 2014 Exhibition.. Thank-you especially to Jeff Holmes from HCC for facilitating this support.

Hopefully we can continue building on this creative vision to provide emerging re-use artists opportunities to make and place work in our community spaces that inspire waste minimization practice. A note to artists, why not visit the Tip-shop at South Hobart and imagine what you could make to enhance this new space. Obviously works would have to be durable, however there is fantastic vertical space inside that could be considered for artwork installation.

Have a look at our awards including,
  • Transforming Trash Together... sponsored by Southern Waste Strategy Authority: $300 worth of awards to schools or community groups.
  • Tasmanian Early Years Foundation... the award/s - encouraging younger participants of AFT from individuals, schools, including pre-schools and community groups. Their awards offer Artery vouchers to the value of $300 dollars.
  • Wearable Art Award.. inventive fashion from re-use materials
  • People's Choice Award...which is voted on by visitors to the exhibition. Every year the winner from the People's choice award becomes the image for the next year's promotional poster, the beautiful work created by Lillydale District School students entitled "Tree of Knowledge"  was the 2013 winner. Amazing that this tree was transported to Hobart on a very windy day by their dedicated art teacher!
  • Youth Trash Rat Award....sponsored by Bendigo Bank Community Sector Banking, is offering youth participation up to 25 years four $50 Student Bank accounts.
Our sponsors also offer in-kind support and contributions toward the cost of the venue hire. Thanking you all once again for your generous support of this event.
You could also sell your work and award yourself with the "I made some cash by making Art From Trash". Which ever way you roll,  just bring it! We love it all.

Entries Close: Tuesday 6th May: Entries now closed: Thank-you.

ART FROM TRASH 2012

Eucalyptus (by Brie)
Over 300 people attended the opening night of Art From Trash 2012 on Friday May 4, at the Long Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre.

Artwork by Bec Pybus

John Vella, Head of Sculpture and Lecturer at the Tasmanian School of Art, who formally opened the exhibition described the exhibition as “impressive on many levels” and one which “had drawn together a rich demographic to experience sculpture and get people thinking about the environment”.

The 140 entries - all produced from waste materials - presented a dazzling range of artworks. Discarded items, salvaged by the participating artists, were transformed into a variety of beautiful, functional, often thought- provoking, sometimes quirky visual artworks.

Over the 16 days duration of the exhibition approximately 3,700 visitors viewed the exhibition.  Visitors covered a broad spectrum and included members of the public - both local and interstate, primary and high school students, Migrant Education and Creative Writing students from the Tasmanian Polytechnic, and a visiting theatre group delegation from China.

Comments and feedback from visitors to the exhibition were highly complimentary and included the following from Peta Fay - “Inspirational ! What a relief that such imaginative and creative people exist. Thank you. The best yet !

Wearable Art Award 2012

Trashy Dresser, Bettina Bomford

Congratulations to Bettina Bomford, winner of the 2012 Wearable Art Award with her entry Trashy Dresser!
Bettina crafted a flirty full-skirted dress with woven bodice from plastic bags, embellished with string bows and jewels made from blue plastic bottles.

The despised plastic shopping bag has never looked so good !
